Soft-serve ice cream is practically a rite of passage for the sweltering days of summer. And now, for at least one day this season, you can get the stuff for free. Business Insider reports McDonald's is offering free ice cream on Sunday, July 16, and it's pretty easy to get.

The company is looking to highlight their changed soft-serve recipe, which gets rid of artificial flavors, colors, and preservatives. The giveaway also seems to be aimed at getting more customers to download its smartphone app.

To get a free cone, download the McDonald's mobile app and have it ready to go. Then, on Sunday, check out the offer under "my deals." If you redeem the offer at a drive-thru or inside a restaurant, you get the freebie.

Money notes that the promotion is happening on National Ice Cream Day, which is a totally made up holiday, but who cares? McDonald's is just one company that will likely give out free ice cream then, so celebrating a fake holiday is totally worth it.

Until the big giveaway, McDonald's is rolling out a big marketing campaign around its ice cream, using the hashtag #SoftServed on Twitter to give people compliments. It's no vanilla soft serve, but it'll do until Sunday.
