Craving a cobbler, but not interested in all the work? Dump cakes are the easier version of the classic summer dessert that take way less work, but still deliver a delicious, very similar result. I have fond memories of my mom's cherry dump cake growing up, and this blueberry version is just as sweet. Fresh blueberries take on a perfect jammy consistency in the oven as the cake mix turns golden brown and crispy, resulting in a simple dessert worthy of being the center of your summer BBQ or picnic. If you’ve never tried this nostalgic, easy-to-make recipe, read below to learn just what it takes to make a dump cake:
What is a dump cake?
The classic dump cake gets its name from the method of just dumping—literally—all of the ingredients in a pan and letting it bake. The butter pats melt, turning the cake mix into a golden-brown, crispy topping that pairs perfectly with our sweet, jammy fruit. The key to turning the cake mix into a delicious topping is the butter, so make sure that not only are you using enough butter, but that it’s evenly distributed on top of your mix.
Can I use other fruit?
Absolutely! We love using fresh blueberries when they’re in season to take advantage of their sweet summer flavor, but you can use practically any in-season fruit in this recipe (peaches, pineapples, blackberries…the list goes on). If you've got a bag of frozen fruit hanging out in your freezer, that will work as well! Just make sure to adjust the cook time—it will take longer in the oven. Alternatively, canned pie filling is great to use no matter the season.
