In the past, there have been restaurant bills that have brought some of our readers to tears. Like the one written for an immigrant waiter amid the tumultuous presidential election. And the Uber generous tip left for an Irish expat so he could fly home for the holidays. Now another message is making headlines for 1) coming from a white Trump supporter and 2) being given to a black waitress in Washington, D.C.

According to the Washington Post, 37-year-old Jason White is a Trump supporter who voted for the current president and walked into a restaurant wearing the campaign's recognizable bright red ball cap.

Rosalynd Harris is a 25-year-old black woman who works at that restaurant as a waitress. She greeted White and his two friends, took their order, and served them as any other customers. When White left, she found a note on their check.

The message, written on the $72.60 bill, was accompanied by a $450 tip. It read: "We may come from different cultures and may disagree on certain issues, but if everyone would share their smile and kindness like your beautiful smile, our country will come together as one people. Not race. Not gender. Just American. God Bless!"

Harris was surprised by the man's words, noticing the note before the 625 percent tip. "This definitely reshaped my perspective. Republican, Democrat, liberal are all subcategories to what we are experiencing," she told the Post. "It instills a lot of hope."

While this is a wonderful example of bridging political differences, we can't help but wonder: Why is being tolerant, accepting, and plain old nice such a big deal that it makes national headlines?
