Christian Bale really has been eating all the pies for his latest role as former Vice President Dick Cheney in an upcoming biopic.

The Hollywood actor was attending the Toronto Film Festival with wife Sibi Blazic when he told reporters he's put on weight for the part by "eating a lot of pies."

He's also bleached his eyebrows for the role.

Bale will star alongside Steve Carell as Secretary of Defence Donald Rumsfeld as the pair reunite with Oscar-winning The Big Short writer and director Adam McKay for the untitled project.

"I've always found Cheney fascinating," McKay told Deadline last year. "Questions of what drove him, what his beliefs were.

"But once we started digging, I was astounded at how much he had shaped modern America's place in the world and how shocking the methods were by which he gained his power."

His American Hustle co-star Amy Adams will play Cheney's wife Lynne, while Sam Rockwell will take on George W Bush - who Cheney served under from 2001-2009.

The film will centre on Cheney avoiding military service during the Vietnam War, his role as CEO of Haliburton, before becoming one of the most famous vice presidents in American history.

Meanwhile, Bale is of course renowned for losing loads of weight and beefing up for film roles, most notably after dropping 60 pounds for his transformation as the emaciated Trevor Reznik in 2004's psychological thriller The Machinist.

He lost weight again for his Oscar-winning turn as a heroin addict in 2010's The Fighter, before gaining weight to sport a pot belly for American Hustle. He's previously bulked up for American Psycho and Batman Begins.
