Last week the internet went into a junk-food frenzy after chocolate and cookie lovers alike found out Cadbury had released an egg filled with Oreo creme. Twitter and Instagram were immediately flooded with posts about the new sweet treat, and now one man is coming forward to claim the candy company stole his idea.
Back in January 2015, 29-year-old Nick Allam decided to crumble Oreos into his Cadbury creme egg while taking a snack break at work, Metro UK reports. Not only did he indulge his sweet tooth, he also mocked up the candy concept and sent a message to Cadbury on Twitter, telling them to "make this."
The UK arm of the candy giant responded to Allam directly, saying "Wow, now that's something we haven't tried before! We'll be sure to put that to our product team, see what they say ;)"
The brand told Metro that it's "unlikely" his idea was truly copped, pointing to the fact that the product was originally on sale in Canada. But Allam told the UK news site that "I'm going to put it out there and say I did invent it, so yes, Cadbury have stolen my idea. I re-tweeted [Cadbury] my original tweet which I sent in 2015, but so far I haven't heard anything back."
What's even more interesting is that other Twitter users are coming to his defense, arguing he is due royalties for his delish concept.
Allam, on the other hand, thinks the situation is comical and would rather recognition than money. "I'm not annoyed and I don't want any money in return," he said. "It is a bit like peanut butter and jelly, I came up with the combination but as I don't own the brands I can't see that I could profit from it, but it would be nice to get a thank you or a response from Cadbury."
But, to make matters even weirder, a deeper search on social media has uncovered another man who claims to have birthed the brilliant idea back in 2013.
Now this is just getting out of hand.
