Earlier this year, Sonic made heads spin when they announced a savory new slush flavor. As of yesterday, the sweet but tart Pickle Slush is officially in stores, so you can stop wondering what the heck the drive-in is thinking about try it for yourself. The summer drink joins Sonic's oversized drink menu with three other new flavors — Bahama Mama, Blue Hawaiian, and Tiger's Blood.

FYI, add-ons for the drinks include popping candy and Nerds, if you're trying to go full-on rainbow with your bev. Also new to the menu: Crispy chicken tenders, made with all white meat and less breading than usual. They're served with Sonic's new signature sauce, a mix of BBQ and honey mustard.

These days, you can get anything you want pickle-flavored: pickle sports drinks, pickle vodka, pickle Pringles, and even dill pickle dip. And now, you can try a pickle slushie starting this summer. Food & Wine reports that Sonic will start selling a pickle juice slush this June. The drink is a bright green and combines that sweet slushie flavor with the unmistakable blast of pickle flavor.

And once the drink hits Sonic locations, you can use the pickle-flavored syrup for anything on the menu. That means you could put it in milkshakes, sundaes, or even burgers, as long as you’re okay with possibly paying an extra charge.

“Quite simply, pickle juice is fun,” Scott Uehlein, vice president of product innovation and development for Sonic, said in a statement. “Nothing says summer like a Sonic slush and only Sonic can bring a completely on trend beverage flavor into 3,500 restaurants."

Of course, this isn’t the first non-standard flavor you can try at Sonic. You can already find slushes with pieces of candy blended inside, lemonades and limeades in countless flavors, and ice cream flurries with ingredients like waffles and cookie dough mixed in. Pickle is definitely a bit more savory than the rest of the desserts and drinks on offer, but it probably would pair nicely alongside a burger or hot dog and some fries.

The pickle slushie has been available elsewhere, at local spots like The Mad Raven in Sparta, Tennessee. And there’s also the Piccadilly, a pickle snow cone that’s popular in the Southwest. Those offerings often include slices or chunks of actual pickles, while Sonic's is pure slush without any pieces. Sonic may be one of the first times a pickle slush has gone nationwide, but locals in the know have learned about the sweet-savory goodness for a while now. Plus, we've gotta wonder if WE had something to do with this trend spreading ...
