Folded down, the turtleneck looks like an average item in your winter wardrobe. But zip the top shut, and the intended message is loud and clear: Leave me alone.

Clever inventor Ruth Grace Wong admits the piece is "more of a statement than a functional piece of clothing." "I can't see anything through my sweater," she wrote on Instructables. "If you find yourself using the leave-me-alone mode a lot, you could add eye holes."

All joking aside, a sealable hood comes in handy in more ways than one. With temps dipping across the country, a little frostbite protection doesn't seem like such a bad idea. Need a nap? Just zip up your wearable sleeping bag. Plus, it's a super-snuggly sweater when worn normally. Basically everyone — social butterfly or not — could use one.

To whip up your own personal cocoon, pick up two yards of knit fabric plus a long zipper. Then follow Ruth's detailed instructions for sewing. You'll be free of small talk before you know it.
