As a pickle freak, when I first heard that the pickle company Brooklyn Brine was making Whiskey Pickles, I was so excited. I'll take pickled cukes in any way, shape, or form. Don't think I'm kidding — at Delish, we've managed to offend (and delight!) even the most devoted pickle fan with stuff like Pickleback Jell-o Shots and Pickleback shots in a pickle. Surprise! We heart Picklebacks.

And we're not the only ones. The bar order of a shot whiskey chased with pickle juice is so popular that Brooklyn Brine decided to devote a flavored pickle of the combo. Ever since they debuted the flavor in 2010, they've been a top-seller.

When I visited the factory and was making the Whiskey Pickles, I was bummed that unlike the Pickleback, these won't get you buzzed. Makes sense, the whiskey goes into a brine of apple cider vinegar and garlic which cooks in a huge metal vat for hours. The booze has gotta burn off.

The hardest part about making pickles? You can't breathe. No, seriously! With hot vinegar, habanero peppers, and garlic wafting in the hot factory air, my eyes were burning. I also smelled disgusting — that rank vinegar permeates your clothes! I got a couple looks on the subway, but who cares?! I was making my favorite food all day.
