When it comes to your kitchen woes, you may think a complete gut job is the only solution, but Joanna Gaines knows there are plenty of less expensive and simpler solutions out there.

To transform your kitchen without spending a ton of money, the designer recommends a series of quick fixes that she always considers when renovating: changing the backsplash, painting the cabinets, swapping out the hardware, upgrading the light fixtures, and layering with beautiful accessories.

First, start with something fast and simple. "I always like to start with the backsplash—that's an easy DIY," Joanna tells CountryLiving.com. "The good thing about a backsplash in smaller spaces is you don't have a ton of square footage that you have to work with, so you can go find a nice, affordable tile, and have fun with the pattern."

Instead of buying new cabinetry, you can easily transform the pieces you already own with fresh paint and hardware. New light fixtures will also instantly revamp the space. And when it comes to everything else, Joanna suggests disguising it or reworking it with accessories.

"I think there's a way to cheat some elements," she says. "If you hate the backsplash, but the countertop is okay, keep the countertop and when you put your canisters and your tea towels up, that's what people will notice when they walk in."

If that all still seems like too much strain on your wallet, the Fixer Upper star has another idea. "Find the top two things you just can't live with, and figure out a solution for those," says Joanna. "Find ways to work around replacing it, find ways to work with what you have. If you go into it thinking 'I don't have enough money, and I hate my stuff,' typically you're not going to be happy with it when it's done anyways. Go into it thinking, 'This is going to be a creative challenge—I can't wait to see what we can do.'"

A positive attitude and a little resourcefulness can make all the difference!
