A grocery store chain that has more than 10,000 locations in Europe is about to take over America. Business Insider reports that Lidl, a German supermarket company, is set to open 100 stores on the East Coast of the United States — and wants to open as many as 600 across the country.

In Europe, Lidl is known for having extreme discounts, similar to Aldi. But in the United States, the company plans on going a little more upscale, so it will be like Trader Joe's meets Harris Teeter. Lidl in the U.S. will focus on locally sourced products and "quality not quantity," according to a company presentation. Stores will measure between 30,000 and 36,000 square feet, which is smaller than a normal grocery store.

Reuters reports that Lidl will open its first 20 stores in Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina this summer. And competitors are noticing, with Kroger opening a cheaper Ruler Foods format, and Whole Foods launching a cheaper 365 chain of stores.

It's unclear whether Lidl will bring over its cheaper store brands to the United States or just focus on brand-name products. It's also unclear whether they will require shoppers to bring their own grocery bags like they do overseas. But Lidl has announced that they will be hiring 4,000 workers over the next 12 months, so start polishing your resume, stat.
